OPTICAL MOLDING SERVICES
Fosta-Tek Optics, Inc. offers full-service injection molding capabilities, with an emphasis on optical and transparent components employing Polycarbonate or Acrylic (PMMA) based polymers. Whether it is prism-corrected lenses for protective eyewear, aspheric lenses for automotive, or specialty optics for instrumentation, Fosta-Tek has the experience it takes to delivery quality parts at a competitive price.

FTO currently operates 18 molding machines from 60 tons to 500 tons uniquely designed for running engineering and optical materials. In addition to conventional injection molding, we can also offer enhanced molding capabilities to minimize part stress, enhance impact resistance and reduce shear in parts under 2mm thick. Some characteristics of our approach are:

• Our molding machines are equipped with hot oil units to maintain better temperature control.

   

• Desiccant dryers are utilized to ensure careful monitoring on controlled material drying.

   

• Our goal is to optimize part quality, unlike molders running on chiller systems seeking to minimize cycle times.

By focusing on engineering and optical resins we understand the careful balance involved between mold temperature, injection speeds and residence times to preserve optics and prevent surface defects. Since engineering resins like Polycarbonate typically require mold temperatures in excess of 250 F, we have dedicated our operation to running hot molds.

We also have the benefit of the full GE Plastics technology team behind us due to our contract relationship with GE  and our position as the largest contract molder in the Northeast using GE's optical grade Lexan resins.

We undertake on-going preventive maintenance to assure molds stay running. If the mold requires repair to an ejector component or insert, we often have it back in operation the next day from our in-house machine shop.

We also have the necessary quality assurance equipment to verify products meet optical design specifications and the experience to know which industry standards need to be considered for end-item conformance testing.
